Hello my friends. Recently I've come to a realization about my "inspirations" especially when they're coming from a tiny screen. In particular I want to talk about the holy grail Instagram. I'm not advocating against Instagram or any other social media for that matter, but I thought I should share my thoughts on what I think the youth is misinterpreting with these social media platforms.
My Story
For a long period of time when I first began my Instagram adventure, I was completely obsessed and absorbed with the thought of "followers" and being exactly like that one girl. I know vague, but I kept changing my inspiration, basically I wanted to be another girl every week. Off of that tangent, I realized that I made my Instagram into a "OOTD" feed, however instead of wearing what I was comfortable in I wanted to be someone else, or my "inspiration" at that time. When you scroll through Instagram now I think it's easy to spot the "OOTD" gurus out there, and I was dressing exactly like them to GAIN DEM FOLLOWERS you know? I changed myself, and I was obsessed with being someone I was not. I know this sounds extremely juvenile changing myself for a social media platform, but when you're young and trying to figure out yourself I was in a vulnerable place where I just wanted to fit in and belong somewhere.
It wasn't until recently, maybe in the span of a couple months so far that I have been able to truly be myself and dress the way I wanted to walk out of the house comfortable with who I was, what I represented, and documenting everything along the way. Even the picture I posted here I would never post on my Instagram because for some reason I don't feel it's "Instagram Worthy". So strange right? Who knew that social media would be such a battle.
My Message
BE YOURSELF AND DO NOT TAKE SOCIAL MEDIA SO SERIOUSLY.
For a very long time, even now I hear girls (and guys sometimes) whine and complain about a girl or guy on a social media platform with their "perfect" lives, body, face, etc. Here's the thing about those people who are either a fitness, OOTD, or social media guru; IT'S ALL AN ILLUSION. I understand these people seem to be "perfect", but what people seem to forget is that this social media platform is their job or full time thing. So being all about fitness, OOTD's, etc. of course they want to present themselves in the best way possible. I mean think about yourself and when you post a #selfie up on your Instagram. How many pictures do you actually take? (A minimum of 50? It's okay I understand don't lie to me girl) And then what filters do you use? Do you use another app to make your face flawless? Do you photoshop? Do you contort your body to get the best angle? There's a lot of work that goes into posting something on Instagram because here's the secret...
Everyone puts up the best version of themselves up.
Social Media is an illusion of the "perfect" version of one person.
Relax my loves, you're more than a social media and tiny screen. X
